Chatsum

Chatsum is a chatting tool that allows you to chat with people from your browser with people who are looking at the same site you are. Very cool idea that reminds me of a persistant chat room that is now built into every website.

  • If you are a website publisher you can see what others are saying about your site or talk to them.
  • Families could use it to goto there family website and instantly be able to chat.
  • People could goto their city’s website to chat with people in the same geographic area.

Many possibilities exist but one thing is for sure this is a pretty cool tool.  Its only possibility for downfall would be the lack of users, it must have enough people using it to make it work.  Secondly, but less of a problem, is that lack of private messaging - maybe you would like to send a message to just one user on that site.

Google Browser Sync

Google has come out with a fantastic extension for firefox.  It syncs all your settings for the browser between your multiple computers.  ie: between your laptop and desktop.  I give it a definite install rating.

Google Firefox Extensions

Check out:

  1. Google Safe Browsing
    • If for some reason you do get fooled into clicking a phising email or accidently browse there, this extension examines the page and blocks access to the page if it is a known phishing site. Very neat. I have actually been protected from one Ebay page already.
  2. Blogger Web Comments
    • Whatever site you are at you can see what bloggers are saying about that site. I think that it might be restricted to blogger.com bloggers only? You can also add your comment through the extension and post to your blogger account.
  3. Google Suggest Search
    • Google Suggest is a search engine that in real-time suggests what you might be wanting to type. This extension allows you to have Suggest in the search bar.

Shortcut

This is a neat shortcut I love to use.

Assumptions:

  1. You are using Firefox (other browsers may apply)
  2. You know your keyboard shortcuts (if you don’t, learn them, it will save you hours in the long run)

Ok, if you ‘alt-d’ to the address bar and then type in a search term (if its only one word you may want to hit the ’space bar’ after the word), for instance searching for ‘picasa download’ and hit ‘enter’.

The result is that firefox will take you to the first website that shows up in a search engine and thus will save you a lot of time because usually with a good search term you will go exactly where you need to go.

Happy computing.

UPDATE:
